VEERLE NANNA VERSTAPPEN

THE NETHERLANDS

“Creating a work is like building a whole new world with different colours, atmospheres and characters. It has its own scent, light and sound. Many times I have thought that my need to create these environments resulted from not being content with the world as it is. I don’t like grey buildings, concrete and the introverted colour palette. I like life to be like an opera, expressive and spectacular. I know now that I like to play with all that is here, the materials and creatures around us. I make work as an ode to life, not as a critic. I am interested in the mystical and that which it is impossible to put into words.

In modern art, beauty has lost its importance and has become secondary to the concept. I am not so interested in that. I want to amaze, I want to celebrate. I want to get lost in the aesthetics, to be drowned in symbolism and fairy tales. I want to give you a moment when you don’t need to think.”

Tell me more white lies 4 N°1097

Woman lies on a man in a white world. Branches over them and transparent material. A triangle, a spherical object and a branch are divided by space. The woman touches the man's face. They both closed their eyes.

Balance, rest a white world. To maintain the serenity, she asks her partner for more sweet words. Tell me more white lies, is about a place where everything stays clean. Love is celebrated and intimacy is maintained.

Womb in Womb 1 N°1090

A woman is sitting on the floor in a cave. Flowers lie around her leg. She is wearing a green blindfold and a red and pink robe. There is light fog.
The woman in the photo just got pregnant. In this image I take her to a slab deep in the earth, where she can find the same feeling as the baby in her belly. A cave also symbolizes the unconscious. The closed eyes emphasize this again.
So you could speak of a double symbolism that refers to the same theme. The uterus, the feminine and the unconscious.

White and black rapture 1 N°1092

You see a blond woman standing next to a sheep. On the ground is a woman with dark hair holding a lamb. The blond woman is looking the other way, then the sheep and the woman with dark hair. the room they are in is painted in black and white. They are wearing black and white clothing except for the pants of the blond woman. The light is dark almost like its night. But the light of the faces of the woman reveal it is daytime.
The photo is about a black and white raptur. It is a hommage to this color setting and the hate love relationship I have towards it. I love black and white, I hate black and white. it is not about, not being part of the sheep. rather, it is about finding your own heart and style being part of the crowd. it is an investigation towards creating an atmosphere and photograph that has the same magic to me as my pastel work. Is my style visible if I don't use my signature colors ??
Can I create a world in between this one and my imagination and experiment with it. I am challenging myself to step out of my own comfortzone and battle with color and sheep. can I find a friction there tyhat is interesting ?? I am not trying to make a happy work here , also not a sad one. Something in between was what I was thriving for.

Holographic love letters for everyone 1 N°1098

In a holographic world, three women are wearing the same type of clothing. They all stand on one leg and point to one side. The photo is mirrored. There are rainbows and most of it is silver.

An ode to life and the universe. An intergalactic party. Not necessarily with a deep underlying meaning, more intended as food for the eye and generating a feeling of wow.

Hundred waters N°1100

You will see a pastel colored design. The doll is wearing a helmet with three books on it. The books have 3 names, Freya, Inanna and Rati. Her shirt has a glittering seahorse. She wears a pleated skirt in all kinds of different pastel colors.
Two standing triangles are attached to the bottom of the dress.

This contemporary goddess looks back on love goddesses from the past, whose names are written on her head on the books.

It's also a little nod to carrying books on your head to learn to walk straight. As a modern goddess, she must protect herself from these love goddesses. If she wants to move forward, she should not be tempted too much. She has to keep the focus on herself. The triangles that pull on her dress are pointed up. This symbolizes the masculine. In all her pastels, she tries to shut herself off from the dangers of any temptations and stay focused on her own path. The seahorse can fertilize itself and is therefore independent.
This character also wants to be.
