“I have always been fascinated by the shape of the human body, fragile yet surprisingly strong even in extreme situations. These impressions derive from my personal experience as a survivor when a very strong earthquake hit Yogyakarta in 2006. More than 5,400 people died and 15,000 were injured. I was trapped for a while, without oxygen and close to death, below the ruins of my house. I’ve been hurt in a way that never shows on my body, with wounds that are deeper than anything that bleeds. It was a traumatic experience, which changed my values and many things in my life. The incident has been transformed into the underlying motivation and inspiration for my art.”
